Viet Nam: Viet Nam: Typhoon Son Tinh (No.8) Situation Report No. 2

I. Summary

  • On the night of 29th October, Typhoon Son-Tinh moved north-east and became tropical depresssion in Mong Cai district, Quang Ninh province.

  • A total of 11 people were killed or are missing as a result of the typhoon; a further 90 people were injured; 55,680 houses were damaged; more than 95,000ha of paddy rice and cash crops were damaged. An initial estimate of total damage is nearly US$2 billion.

  • Electricity and communication systems are being restored in Hai Phong, Thai Binh, Nam Dinh and Ninh Binh provinces.

  • Based on the latest damage reports, Nam Dinhand Thai Binh are the worst affected provinces.

  • The Government started responding quickly in the aftermath of the storm and has not requested for any additional assistance.

  • The INGOs and UN DRMT members met on 31st October and agreed not to conduct a joint rapid assessment. The INGOs and the Red Cross that are operating in the affected provinces will continue to collect further information of humanitarian and early recovery needs and share to all concerned agencies.
